There are summer weddings, and then there are summer weddings. You know the sort, the ones where the sun turns up with absolutely no intention of leaving, everyone is wondering where the nearest bit of shade might be, and the photographer starts questioning whether carrying around several kilograms of camera equipment was really such a sensible career choice.

This wedding at Bickley Mill in Newton Abbot was definitely one of those days!

It was a gloriously hot July wedding, and I had the pleasure of photographing everything from bridal preparations right through to the first dance. There was a beautiful colour scheme, a groom who looked as though he could have stepped straight out of a James Bond film, a lovely outdoor ceremony, and one particularly special speech from the couple’s young son.

It was a wonderful day, full of laughter, emotion and those little moments that make every wedding unique.

Back to One of My Favourite Venues

I’ve photographed quite a few weddings at Bickley Mill over the years, so arriving here always feels a little like coming home.

I know many of the staff, I’m familiar with the layout, and I know exactly where I need to be for the important parts of the day. That familiarity makes a real difference when photographing a wedding because there’s less time spent working out where everything is and more time concentrating on the people and the moments unfolding around me.

Bickley Mill is a lovely wedding venue near Newton Abbot, surrounded by Devon countryside and offering a mixture of rustic charm, beautiful gardens and characterful buildings. It has a relaxed atmosphere that works particularly well for couples who want their wedding to feel personal rather than overly formal.

I started the day by photographing the venue and ceremony room before heading upstairs to join the bridal party.
