F.A.Q's for seeing a ghost at Berry Pomeroy Castle

What's the best time?

The best times I've found to go down are dusk, dawn and at exactly 12.10am (No idea why that time). Almost all of my sightings have been at 12.10am.

Also bear in mind that the huge majority of other peoples sightings have been during the day. If I wasn't working daytimes I would be sure I would see more during the day if I went there.

What boosts the chances of seeing a ghost at Berry Pomeroy Castle?

There are a number of things that seem to help:

1. Not too many of you (2 to 4 max but going alone does achieve good results, I often go alone)

2. Never go inside! Not only is it illegal but once you've been inside you will not a stand a chance of seeing a ghost. Also if anyone else is there and inside the Castle then forget about seeing one, it won't happen.

3. Walking up the rear footpath seems to bring more success that going down the main road.

4. Try not to use a torch or camera until you're about to leave. I've noticed that once anything has shone on the castle the possibility of seeing something goes down greatly.

5. The best spot to stand seems to be where the cafe is.

6 Respect the place. If you're going to make jokes about the ghosts or the castle they will not show themselves.

7. Bring a dog if you can. Mine senses things before they happen and is a great way of ruling out 99% of feelings/sightings/smells etc.

8. A red candle - During the summer (no wind) I used to use a candle to find our way up to the castle. A red candle seems to raise the success rate slightly but again I have no idea why. Once you reach the castle blow it out. If it's had any affect you would see something as you reached the castle.

Where are the hot spots?

1. Outside and in front of St Margaret's Tower

2. The Rampart Walk

3. The kitchen

I want to sense something.... anything.... any tips?

If you want to try a "feeling presence" then face the main entrance. There is a arrow slit just before the main entrance and to the right. (Click here for an image of exactly where I mean).

I've lost count of the amount of times I have felt a presence when I put my arm in there. The really weird thing about this spot is if you put your hand in any of the other slots to that room you won't feel a thing. It is only this one window which rules out the possibility of it being just cold etc. I have amazed a number of my friends and non-believers showing them this! It doesn't happen all the time but it certainly happens a lot!

What should I rule out?

1. Shadows - a Ghost is a very, very bright light. There is no mistaking a real ghost when you see one.

2. Screams - Foxes make noises that sound like screams. You can discount all but the most unusual.

What about a Ouija Board, any good there?
