It was great to be back working with Torquay RFC again for another photoshoot. This time the brief was a big one; 65 player portraits, a full team photo, and some action shots of the lads training.
It was a very wet evening, the kind where you question why you ever trusted the weather forecast. Getting from the car to the clubhouse was an adventure in itself, dodging puddles and trying to keep all my gear dry. Once inside the bar area, I set up a backdrop and lighting ready for the portraits.
For lighting, I used my trusty Godox AD200 inside my favourite Pixapro softbox, which always gives such clean, flattering light for portraits. Once everything was dialled in, the players came through one by one. We got all 65 portraits done smoothly, even with a few laughs along the way.
Just as we finished, the rain eased off, so we made a mad dash outside to grab the big team photo while we had the chance. Timing was everything; five minutes later and we’d have all been soaked again.
After that, I switched gears and got a series of action shots of the players practising. The conditions made it tricky, but the effort and energy from everyone really came through in the photos.
I’ve worked with Torquay RFC before, and it’s always a pleasure to go back. It’s a great club with a brilliant atmosphere, and the players and staff made the whole evening fun despite the weather.
