Photographing a wedding at Cockington church and the Grand Hotel, Torquay, Devon.

This was an incredibly lovely wedding to be a wedding photographer. The Bride, Groom, Guests and even the Reverend made me feel so welcome. Let’s look at how the day unfolded…

Let’s look at the photos first. A detailed description of the day can be found below.

Cockington is a beautiful part of Torquay where time has stood still. Thatched roof houses, stunning grounds and 3 choices to hold a wedding. Cockington is a favourite amongst couples getting married.

Out of the 3 venues, Cockington Parish Chruch is the most impressive. It is 950 years old and you can feel the history surround and comfort you as you walk in.

For a wedding photographer, the church is a little bit of a challenge because, like many old buildings, the natural light coming in isn’t as bright as the more modern, but less character buildings. Don’t let that put you off though. The ambience inside the church really fits with the mood and character.

Rev Chris(tine) was incredibly kind and nice. She answered the questions I had regarding my wedding photography but went a step further by showing me every part of the ceremony and where people would be during the different parts of the wedding ceremony. We worked really well together and I hope we get to work together again soon.

This may sound silly, but I still get really nervous before each wedding. It isn’t until I take my first shot that I start to relax into my rhythm. I also don’t think it matters how many ‘checklists’ you can have, I can’t help but worry that I haven’t packed everything I’ll need.

After some formal shots around The Royal Terrace Gardens and Princess Pier, we arrived at the Grand Hotel for the reception. The staff were all lovely and the layout was really well done.

The Groom gave one of the funniest wedding speeches I’ve ever heard. Even I couldn’t help but raise my shutter speed to stop any camera shake because I couldn’t help but laugh as well.

Fun Fact: This is the first wedding where I got some wedding cake. People always say I must love wedding cake but you never get to have any, as wedding photographers tend to leave before the cake is given out.
